Christ with 2 sisters of Bethany (Maria and Martha) painted by Velasquez in 1618, when 19 years old, may have been the beginning of genre of “picture within picture“ later exploited by the artist the uttermost in the famous “Las Meninas” or “Velasquez with the Royal family”, that most likely influenced 3 centuries later Salvador Dali to whom Holographic of stereoscopical superimposition of Dimensions, paintings within a painting, became not an obsession. The whole phenomenon may have been initiated by Shakespeare’s “play within play” in “Hamlet”, unless I miss something of even earlier phenomenology tracing as far back as ancient Greeks. Nowadays we must go back to Sophocles and Euripides. The phenomenon of a thing within a thing might be a part of universal unconsciousness, as, being obscure the subject matter, I unconsciously painted a picture within a picture in my early works, now in AK Connecticut and Princeton collections
